Top Ten Tuesday: Things That Make Me Pick Up a Book

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018.

I’m pretty picky about what books I pick up/add to my TBR.

SevenHusbands

1. Booktube

I spend a lot of time on watching Booktube. More than I probably should 😅 But I’ve grown to trust the recommendations of some of my favorite channels – Books and Lala, Chelsea Dolling Reads, Books with Emily Fox, Peace Love Books, and Merphy Napier.

2. Hype

We’re all susceptible to it. If I keep hearing about a book, eventually I look into it. And I’ve found some of my favorite books of all time this way.

3. Available from Book of the Month

I love Book of the Month and I trust their recommendations.

4. Author I Love

If a favorite author releases a new book, I will most likely pick it up asap.

5. Goodreads

I spend SO (too) much time looking through the new releases section on Goodreads. It’s where I find a lot of upcoming books I want to pick up.

6. Bookstagram

I love bookstagram and like all other book platforms, spend a gross amount of time scrolling through there. I follow a lot of publishers, indie authors, and reviewers here so I find new books all the time.

7. Genre I’m Currently Obsessed With/Mood Reading

I go through phases with genres – my latest obsession is romance. So I’m actively searching for new authors/books to fit my reading mood.

8. Available on Kindle Unlimited or Hoopla

I’m not sponsored, I just love both these platforms. It’s a great way to check out books I wouldn’t normally pick up.

9. Readathon Challenges

It’s no secret I love readathons. And they’re a great way to expand my reading comfort zone.

10. A Really Good Blurb

If the blurb is outstanding, intriguing, or compared to a favorite book of mine, I will pick it up. I’m not a cover buyer, I’m a blurb buyer.

I thought it would be fun to mention a few things that DON’T make me pick up a book, because I think I have some unpopular opinions here.

1. The Cover

I have never purchased a book without knowing the synopsis. A cover may grab my attention to look up the book, but I’m, by nature, a non-impulsive person. So while I appreciate beautiful covers, they don’t really impact my book buying.

2. “Celebrity” Authors

I won’t pick up a book SOLEY on the fact that the author is well known – Booktuber, celebrity, etc. The truth is I’m downright picky about what I spend my time reading and I won’t read something I don’t like just to support someone.

3. Reviews

Okay hear me out… I LOVE reading book reviews. However, I don’t tend to read/listen to many about books I’m anticipating but haven’t yet read. The reason being – a lot of reviews go into more detail about the plot than I want to know before picking up a book. So I tend to steer clear until I’ve read the book already. Also, good/bad reviews are going to sway me if I’m already interested.  I WILL seek out reviews if I’m on the fence though!

Do you agree/disagree with any of these? What is something that makes you pick up a book??
