The Mid Year Freak Out Tag

How is it possibly time for this tag already?!

I won’t lie – I’m having a bit of an existential crisis writing this post… How is it half way through the year?! What is this nonsense?

But here we are.

I (along with everyone else in the community) do this post every year. You can check out my 2020 and 2019 version if you’d like. But without further ado let’s get to the questions!

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2021

People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

This is the second year in a row Emily Henry was the answer to this question! Last year her book was beat out for my favorite super late in the game (by Addie LaRue) but she is easily a new all-time favorite author.

This book made me swoon so fucking hard. And I just loved the themes of friendship and love and acceptance in here. Amazing.

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2021

Good Girl Bad Blood by Holly Jackson

Holly Jackson writes THE BEST YA mysteries out there. Her ability to not only craft a twisty and dark mystery but also make you care so deeply for the characters is unparalleled.

I thought there was no way I would love this as much as A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder – boy was I wrong.

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to

Fucking all of them…… (sorry not sorry for my language 😅) One of the toughest things about being in the book world is being exposed to 9 million books and knowing you’ll never be able read them all.

An Unexpected Peril by Deanna Raybourn

This book has been on at least 2 TBRs already this year but it just hasn’t happened… But it will! I can’t wait to be back with these characters again.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

This question is impossible 😅 Luckily I have a whole list coming for this later in the month!

As Good As Dead by Holly Jackson

But I’m going with this because it’s the final book in this series/world and after the ending of book 2 I NEED THIS. This is going in such a unique and heartbreaking direction and I want more of Pip and Ravi.

5. Biggest disappointment

Lost in the Never Woods by Aiden Thomas

Okay I want to be very clear that I didn’t DISLIKE this book. But I’ve read some amazing books this year and coming off Cemetery Boys (one of my favorite books of 2020) I found this one slightly lacking.

It’s not a bad book by any means and it discusses some wonderful themes. But it didn’t hit me the way Aiden’s debut did.

6. Biggest surprise

The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

I downloaded this from Netgalley PURELY because of this stunning cover. But wow was I blown away. Historical fiction isn’t always my jam but this one was fantastically executed.

And the audiobook is amazing!

7. Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you)

I’m tweaking this just slightly. I don’t like to exclaim a “new favorite author” until I’ve read at least 2 books from them. And I’ve only done that 1 new author this year and they were in the same duology.

SO. Instead I’m going to name my favorite debut book so far.

A Dark and Hollow Star by Ashely Shuttleworth

This queer YA urban fantasy took me on a damn ride! It’s definitely one of those books that takes a minute to get going. But once I was in it, I was IN IT. This book has an amazing cast of queer teens, Fae, murder, and all the banter.

8. Newest fictional crush

It’s a toss up between Alex from People We Meet on Vacation and Ethan from The Intimacy Experiment! Be still my heart

9. Newest favourite character

Shane & Ilya from Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid

God I love these 2! Maybe I should reread this….

10. Book that made you cry

A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J Maas

So fun fact about me: I’m a book crier. I cry ALL. THE. TIME. while reading. But I think this one made me cry the most.

I was so apprehensive going into this book… Not only did I hate Nesta but I just wasn’t sure if this was a world I wanted to revisit or continue. But SJM convinced me and then some.

When I say I sobbed…

Is this my new favorite ACOTAR book? Maybe…

11. Book that made you happy

One Last Stop by Casey McQusiton

This book is everything I love in romance and more. It has characters you can’t help but fall in love with, found family, swoony romance, hilarious banter, all with a fantastical sci fi twist. I couldn’t stop smiling while reading this!

12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

I won’t lie… I’ve received/bought a ridiculous amount of books this year… So it’s hard to choose the single most beautiful. So here are some of my favorite instead

Apparently I have a thing for red heads and purple covers 😅 Who knew?

13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

LOL! I can’t even begin to explain how excessive my TBR has grown. This year alone, I still have 57 unread ARCs that need to be reviewed… which is INSANE. So yeah… If I could learn to read faster, that would be great 😅
