Happy Blogmas Day 4!๐
My TBR is perpetually out of control. There are just SO many books I want to get to. Because of that, I try to avoid adding books just because of the hype.
I am brutally honest in this. So if you’re sensitive to reading negativity about books you love, you may want to skip this one. As always, if you’re favorite book is on here, it is not a personal attack against you or your family. These are purely my personal impressions. Feel free to try and sway me in the comments!
Here are some really popular or hyped books I have no interest in reading.
1. The Mortal Instruments (or any of it’s subsidiaries) by Cassandra Claire
I don’t like paranormal books. I don’t like vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, any of it. So at it’s base, this just doesn’t appeal to me. Plus this series is SO LONG. With so many books I want to read, I don’t want to pick up a million book series just because everyone else loves them.
2. The Folk of the Air series by Holly Blake
I’m pretty sure every single person I follow on Goodreads has read this, the main page is so long haha. Honestly, I’m a little YA-Fae-Fantasy’d out and the synopsis sounds exactly like everything else.
3. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
Teenage girl needs to harness her unmatched powers to save the world while she falls madly in love with an obnoxiously attractive yet abusive man. Pass.
4. Scythe by Neal Shusterman
Every time I hear someone talk about this book, it’s about how amazing the politics and world building is. And honestly I think that sounds so boring. For reference, I’m also like the only person ever who thought House of Cards was boring as all get-up so..
5. The Selection by Kiera Cass
Everyone compares this to The Bachelor and I honestly hate those shows. So this is out.
6. The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan
This is a middle grade series and I think if I had read this 18 years ago I probably would have loved it. But it’s just not something I see myself connecting to at almost 30.
7. The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
I don’t love historical fiction, or usually YA contemporary unless it’s hard hitting YA (think the Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake). And nothing about following 3 stuck up teenagers across Europe interests me.
8. The Diviners by Libba Bray
Again, I don’t like paranormal or historical fiction. Plus I read A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray and it’s one of my least favorite books of all time. So I don’t think this is for me.
9. Renegade by Marissa Meyer
I loved The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer but superheroes just really aren’t my thing. So I just don’t think this is for me.
10. The Nevernight Chronicle by Jay Kristoff
I keep hearing how Kristoff’s writing is “interesting” and that this first book is hard to get through.. but the rest of the series is really good. Again, with all the books I want to read, I’m sick of forcing myself through books I don’t like to “get to the good part”. So I’m gonna skip this.
Bonus: The Kingkill Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss
I’m adding this one at the end because I actually REALLY want to read this series. However I absolutely refuse to pick it up until the third book is released. I don’t want to be victim to another never completed series haha.
Let me know if you’ve read any of these or if I should consider changing my mind about them. Are there any popular books you don’t plan to read??
