Synopsis

After the collapse of the glass castle, Chaol is broken both physically and mentally. He and Nesryn sail to Antica in hopes of find allies for the war and way to heal Chaol’s legs. But their time in Antica brings more than what they expected, changing them both.

My Review

Holy cow I loved this book. I put this book off forever because Chaol and Nesryn have been my least favorite characters in the series. But 100% regret putting it off because this  was amazing.

“It was like waking up or being born or falling out of the sky. It was an answer and a song, and she could not think or feel fast enough.”

What I Loved

1. Yrene was my favorite character in this book and one of my new favorite characters in the series. She is the strong female character I’ve been waiting for. She isn’t overly badass, she isn’t cold and snarky. She is relatable, and smart, and kind, and witty. And I love her.
2. Chaol and Yrene’s relationship is so damn precious. I am so glad he didn’t end up with Nesryn. I ship these to so hard.
3. I am eating my words… I like Chaol. I never thought I’d see the day guys. I have hated him through almost the entire series. But the emotional growth and transition he goes through in this book was really amazing.

What I Didn’t Love

1. I still can’t stand Nesryn, I just find her so dull. Being good with a bow isn’t enough of a character arc for me to be invested. Sartaq, who we met for the first time in this book, was more memorable and enjoyable to read about than Nesryn.
2. This is something I expect in Maas’s books but it’s still a bookish pet peeve. I hate “unspoken conversations”. Like I have never gotten that much detail from eye contact, nonetheless from someone I’ve known for all of a few weeks. And it was CONSTANT in this book. This is the reason I took away a half star, I was pretty annoyed by this 3/4 of the way through.

I’m so glad I finally picked this book up. I love this world so much. Now on to the finale!
