I’m kicking off my end of the year series with my 5 most disappointing reads of 2019!
Not all of these necessarily received super low ratings. I just had really high expectations for these and sadly they didn’t live up.
These are ranked from least to most disappointing.
5. Serious Moonlight by Jenn Bennett ⭐⭐⭐
I had heard such amazing things about Jenn Bennett’s books so I had some high expectations going into this. Unfortunately I was pretty disappointed by this book. I found it really slow and drawn out. And I never 100% connected to these characters.
4. The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware ⭐⭐⭐
This book was crazy hyped this year! Unfortunately it didn’t live up to all that hype for me… This book was extremely atmospheric and creepy. But unfortunately I didn’t love the pacing of this and the ending was a major disappointment.
3. These Witches Don’t Burn (These Witches Don’t Burn #1) by Isabel Sterling ⭐⭐.5
A large chunk of my disappointment with this book had to do with my own expectations. I was in the mood for a light, fun witchy read and this… was not that. This was dramatic and much darker than I was looking for and expecting.
2. Wilder Girls by Rory Power ⭐⭐⭐
I didn’t have the same visceral reaction other people did to this. I thought is was fine. The ending was a major flop but overall I just thought it was slow and underwhelming. Not bad by any means, just not the same hit I was expecting it to be. I am however super excited to read more from Rory Power!
1. More Than Words by Jill Santopolo ⭐⭐
This was my biggest disappointment of the year… The Light We Lost was one of my favorite books of 2018 so I was hyped for this release. But unfortunately I just found this extremely pretentious and disappointing.
What was your most disappointing book of 2019?
Um, yeah. The Turn of the Key was a big disappointment.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thought so! I’ve seen so many 5 star reviews and it keeps appearing on favorite of the year lists 😅

I read a few Ruth Ware books and thought In a Dark, Dark Wood was extremely disappointing. They’re readable, but I don’t get too much entertainment out of them. My biggest disappointment of 2019 was Turtles All the Way Down. Against my better judgement, I read a book by him that a Booktuber I liked a lot said was their new favorite and it was just painful. I’m making my 2019 DNF post soon 😉

Well I definitely don’t regret skipping Turtles All the Way Down now 😂 I’ve actually never read anything by that author and don’t plan to start haha

It’s interesting to hear your thoughts on The Turn of the Key. I loved it all the way until the end and like you I also found the ending to be a huge disappointment after all that build up.

Yes!! I’m so glad I’m not the only one who felt that way ❤️ It was such a long, ominous build up for a very lackluster reveal.

For me I found the silent patient disappointing, but I know a lot of people love it

Oh no! It’s on my 2020 list of backlist books I need to read 🙈 It definitely seems like a book people either love or hate though
