My Thoughts
First off – this book is really intense and descriptive in some of the more graphic content. This book goes into a lot (in my opinion too much) detail about Will’s sister’s illness and suicide. As well as on page child abuse and animal cruelty. There were definitely moments that were hard to stomach and I had to skim over some of the more descriptive scenes.
My favorite part of this story was the intense and suspenseful atmosphere Mary Kubica created. I was on the edge of my seat from the get-go. Not only was this setting alone eerie, but this book just made me feel like I was being watched. I loved all of the creepy vibes.
I went into this without re-reading the synopsis because I wanted to be surprised and (to an extent) surprised I was! This book just throws you in with no explanation and I was so invested in figuring out the backstories and how all the characters were connected. I didn’t find the big reveal to be especially surprising (I take notes while I read and my guess around the 44% mark ended up being pretty accurate) however I really enjoyed the pacing of how things were revealed. There are tons of side characters with dark or secret pasts so there was always action and reveals happening which kept the book moving and fast paced.
While I loved the creepy vibes and pace of this, I was pretty disappointed by the ending. I felt like there was a lot of buildup for a pretty lackluster conclusion. And I could have done without the epilogue entirely. I totally appreciate what the author was going for – I highly recommend reading the Author’s Note at the end – but it just wasn’t for me.
Overall, this was just a pretty average domestic thriller for me. It had an amazing eerie vibe, but I didn’t find it especially surprising or memorable.
