Witchy and magical book recommendations!
I LOVE witchy books! I love fantastical books set in the real world and books with witches always seem to deliver on that.
Here are some of my favorite witchy books! Some are spooky, some cute and fun, some are more fantastical than others. So hopefully you’ll find a new witchy book that perfect for your reading taste!
1. The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson
Okay I know I keep recommending this book. But honestly I’m not sorry. This is a creepy, adult horror novel following a young women born into a puritanical society haunted by the ghosts of 4 witches. This book is dark and full and badass witch vibes.
2. The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw
This is a YA light-fantasy that takes place in seaside vacation town. Every year the ghosts of 3 witches call boys into the water and drown them. My favorite thing about this book were the chapters set in the past following the 3 sisters and the ominous atmosphere of this small town.
3. The Casquette Girls by Alys Arden
I recently talked about this book in the my Dark/Gothic book recommendation post but I wanted to mention it again here because it’s really underrated in my opinion. This book is not only has vampires but it also follows witches! There are many different types of witches and magic in here and it follows covens across different timelines.
4. The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden
This series has a totally different vibe than anything else on this list! This is a really slow, atmospheric historical fantasy following a young woman throughout her life in Russia. The main character has the ability to see the old gods and is chastised as a witch. This follows her as she faces the dark forces that are attempting to take over Russia as the old gods are forgotten.
5. Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas
This is follows a Latinx boy who is trying to prove himself as a Brujo. In his attempt, he accidentally summons the ghost of the school’s bad boy. Now he’s stuck with this ghost he’s unable to send on. It has a fun mystery, a beautiful familial story, and lots of magic.
6. Mayhem by Estelle Laure
This is a feminist, magical YA contemporary that has all the Practical Magic vibes! It follows a teen who is discovering her family’s magical lineage in Santa Maria, California.
7. Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker
This one has pretty obvious witchy vibes! This YA graphic novel is a more classic take on witches. It follows a teen girl who is mastering her magic and falling in love with her long time best friend (who is also a werewolf). It’s the perfect, quick witchy read for October!
8. Winterwood by Shea Ernshaw
Another Shea Ernshaw book because she just writes the best atmospheric, witchy books! This one is set in winter and follows a teenage girl who finds young man in the haunted woods behind her home. This book follows the mystery of them uncovering what happened to the boy interweaved with the pages from the main characters family spell book. This book is slow but beautifully written and utterly magical.
9. The Babysitters Coven Kate Williams
Another totally different witchy vibe! This YA contemporary is The Babysitters Club meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Do you really need to know any more? It’s adorable, witchy, and really fun time!
