10 book recommendations featuring animals ❤️
Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018.
This was surprisingly difficult topic for me! I apparently don’t read books featuring animals in almost any capacity 😅
But I was able to wrangle 10 recommendations from a slew of different genres. This list features everything from paranormal middle grade to adult romance to horror. So hopefully there’s a little something for everyone!
1. The Mercyverse by Patricia Briggs
This urban fantasy series features shifters! Not only are there more traditional wolven, but the main character is a walker (someone with ability to shift into a coyote).
2. Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh
Another urban fantasy series featuring shifters. But this book is about a pack of leopard shifters. I loved Nalini Singh’s take on this classic character. And this is one of my favorite fantasy romances of all time so I highly recommend this one if you’re into urban fantasy.
3. The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden
This series has my favorite animal companion of all time. Vasilisa acquires a horse she can communicate with and they have the most wonderful and heartwarming bond. This series starts off a little slow but it’s 100% worth the commitment. It’s one of the best fantasy series.
4. Blanca & Roja by A.M. McLemore
This YA magical realism follows a family cursed by swans. Every generation, one sister is chosen to become a swan as a sacrifice. This story is beautifully told and full of heart-wrenching themes.
5. The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater
One of my favorite series of all time! Ronan and his crow Chainsaw are my everything. If you like amazing friend groups and dark lush fantasy, definitely check out this series if you haven’t yet!
6. Cassidy Blake series by Victoria Schwab
The cover of this is pretty deceiving. You’d think Cassidy’s cat plays a bigger role in the story. But sadly that’s not the case. But they do have a cat they take on tips with them – and he’s constantly getting into trouble.
7. Bunny by Mona Awad
This is a much (much) darker take on literary animals than everything else on this list. If you want something twisted, confusing, and addictive, this adult dark academic horror is for you. I won’t go into detail because it’s best to go in blind – but the poor bunnies…
8. Much Ado About You by Samantha Young
The hero in this sweet small town romance has a dog that is responsible for the couple’s meet cute! This has a great setting and an absolutely swoony romance.
9. Moose Springs, Alaska series by Sarah Morgenthaler
Another hero with an adorable dog! Graham has a rescue that he dresses up in adorable outfits. This book/series is pretty corny and over the top but it’s also a good time. If you need something light and fun, this is a perfect pick.
10. Let’s Get Textual by Teagan Hunter
This book has baby goats!! Do you need to know anything else? Teagan Hunter writes the best steamy and laugh out loud funny romances. Plus baby goats!
I definitely need to add more books featuring animals to my TBR! So drop some recommendations in the comments if you have any!
I love the Mercy Thompson series, great list!
