Book Tag: Goodreads Was Wrong

I feel lied to…

This tag was originally created by Booktuber Gabs About Books. And it’s all about sharing your unpopular opinions!

As always with these type of posts – don’t come for me if your favorite book is mentioned here. I promise it’s not an attack against you or your family ❤️

What is the highest rated book that you gave a low rating? (Sort your books in Goodreads based on Average Ratings and find the highest rated book you gave a low rating).

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Goodreads Rating: 4.44⭐
My Rating: 2.5⭐

Okay I don’t think it’s any secret that I have very lukewarm feelings about this book. In fact I DNF’d the sequel. I just… don’t care 🙈 I guess I get why this has high ratings? It just didn’t do anything for me. I didn’t care about the characters, the heist, nothin.

What is the lowest rated book that you gave a high rating? (Sort your books in Goodreads based on Avg Ratings, in reverse order, and find the lowest rated book you gave a high rating).

The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay

Goodreads Rating: 3.35⭐
My Rating: 4⭐

I totally get why this horror/thriller doesn’t work for everyone. But I was honestly scared shitless the entire time I was reading. And the ending was (personally) perfectly unsettling. It’s open ended AF which a lot of people don’t love, but I thought it was the perfect way to end this particular story.

What is the most popular book you disagree with the avg rating? (Sort your books in Goodreads based on number of Ratings, and find the first book you disagree with the avg rating)

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Number of Ratings: 3,998,014
Goodreads Rating: 3.93⭐
My Rating: 5⭐

This isn’t exactly a mind blowing opinion.. But the average rating is a lot lower than what I personally gave it so we’re rolling with it. This is my favorite classic of all time. It’s perfect (feel free to fight me on it 😅)

What is the least popular book you disagree with the avg rating? (Sort your books in Goodreads based on number of Ratings, in reverse order, and find the first book you disagree with the avg rating).

Scream All Night by Derek Milman

Number of Ratings: 1, 276
Goodreads Rating: 3.78⭐
My Rating: 5⭐

Again this isn’t anything super controversial… I just really liked this semi-pointless, quirky novel. It’s super character driven and it’s really just an exploration of this outrageous family. It’s humorous which is definitely a subjective and risky thing in books. But it was a favorite of mine from 2018!

Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey

Goodreads Rating: 3.58⭐
My Rating: 5⭐

I totally get why people didn’t like this 😅 But I was HERE for the dirty talk. And I personally loved Georgie’s personal journey throughout this book.

Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand

Goodreads Rating: 3.70⭐
My Rating: 5⭐

Omg it physically pains me knowing that this book only has a 3.7 average 😅 One of my favorite books of all time! This book is super strange and dark and uber feminist. But it’s also weird so I guess I understand…

The Vanishing Deep by Astrid Scholte

Goodreads Rating: 3.68⭐
My Rating: 2⭐

Oh man I really didn’t like this book. I listened to this on audio at like 3x speed because I just wanted it to be over already.. This book was super inconsistent in it’s world building and rules and it felt like the author just tried to put too much into there.

The Lady Rogue by Jenn Bennett

Goodreads Rating: 3.70⭐
My Rating: 2⭐

I remember the ending of this making me viscerally angry 😅 The entire book is following the characters meandering all over this fantasy world and then the climactic battle lasts for like… a page.

Sanctuary by Alexandria House

Goodreads Rating: 4.47⭐
My Rating: 3⭐

There’s nothing wrong with this book or this rating. I just didn’t completely click with this romance. I think part of it is because it’s novella, so there aren’t quite enough pages to make me fall for these characters.

Elixir by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Goodreads Rating: 4.38⭐
My Rating: 3⭐

I went with another novella! Again there’s nothing wrong with this novella. It just didn’t add much to the story. In fact this book ends in exactly the same position it started. It just kinda gives some insight into another characters actions.

Goodreads is so skewed to higher ratings I can’t imagine reading anything below a 3 star average…

Catherine House by Elisabeth Thomas

Goodreads Rating: 3.11⭐
My Rating: 3.5⭐

But the lowest rated book on my entire list is Catherine House and I honestly don’t think it deserves that low of a rating! This book weird and kinda pointless but I also never wanted to stop reading!

Do you usually agree or disagree with Goodreads ratings? Overall I’m usually pretty spot on with the average.. I guess I just don’t have very unpopular opinions ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  1. I honestly don’t look at ratings so much, I do read reviews but if the plot caught my interest then I will pick up the book regardless. I agree with you re: six of crows, I really like the tv adaptation but I couldn’t get into any of Leigh Bardugo’s books (weird I know lol)

    • It definitely gets to be a lot with all these platforms to keep up with! You’re not missing much over there honestly 😅 I mostly just use it to track my reading at this point since I’m terrible and keeping up with a journal 🙈
