Spookathon Wrap Up

Hey guys! I can’t believe another Spookathon is already over – this year has seriously flown by!

This wasn’t my greatest readathon ever, and I definitely didn’t stick to my TBR… But I was able to finish a total of 3 books and start another 4. So it was still a good reading week! I’ve also been in this weird place where there’s so many things I want to read that I keep starting new books without finishing one.

Full reviews on each of these is coming, but for now here’s my rating and some thoughts on what I read.

1. The Broken Girls – 4 Stars

This completed two challenges: read a thriller and not set in current time period. And I really enjoyed this! This book was dark, and creepy, and totally perfect for this readathon. This flashes between 1950 and present day at an old boarding school for troubled girls. There’s a mild paranormal subplot, but the majority of this a realistic mystery. If you’re looking for something spooky for Halloween, and you enjoy mysteries, definitely check this one out!

2. A House at the Bottom of the Lake – 2.5 Stars

This could also meet the challenge for read a thriller. I picked this up because it’s been on my TBR forever, it’s really short, and it was free on Kindle Unlimited. I’ve heard a lot of mixed things but I wanted to give it a shot anyways. I will say, this book was really creepy. Nothing scary was actually happening, but Josh Malerman’s writing had me on edge and anxious from the very beginning. So I enjoyed that portion. But the ending.. I just don’t understand.

3. An Unwanted Guest – 4 Stars

This was a solid 3 star book for me until the final chapter. The last little twist made me add an extra star. This book takes place at a small inn, in the middle of nowhere, where 10 guests and the 2 owners get snowed in. This is a classic whodunit told in alternating perspectives between all of the 12 characters. And I loved it! This didn’t really fit a challenge but I had started it earlier in the month and wanted to come back to it.

Those are all of the books I completed! Below are the 4 others books I started.

1. Toil & Trouble: 15 Tales of Women & Witchcraft

This fulfilled the purple on the cover challenge. But I’ll be honest, I’m almost half way through this and am feeling pretty ‘meh’ about it. I’ve only given out 2 or 3 star ratings for the first 6 stories. And all but one story has been about teenage romance (not my favorite thing). I was expecting more “witchy” vibes from this. I can only read one or two at a time before growing bored, so I think I’m going to read one every day until Halloween. That way I can still finish it before the end of the month.

2. City of Ghosts

This was for the challenge of spooky word in title: Ghost. I’m listening to this on audiobook and I am officially the world’s slowest audiobook listener. This thing is only 5 hours long but it’s somehow taken me over a week… I don’t know what’s wrong with me guys! The narrator is really good, I love the story, I just prefer physical books. I have 45 min left though, so I’m determined to finish this, this week!

3. Dead Mountain

This satisfied the challenge to read a book with pictures. It is a nonfiction story about a Russian mountain expedition that mysteriously dies. And holy cow is it fascinating! I found this book from Books and Lala, because that’s where I get most of my recommendations, and I’m so glad I did! I read about a quarter of this on Sunday but had to put it down for the next book. I will definitely finish this, this month too!

4. Tower of Dawn

Okay lastly, I had to FINALLY pick this up. I’ve been putting it off forever because Chaol is the actual worst. But Kingdom of Ash comes out TOMORROW (!) and I need to read it asap. So I’m reading this as quickly as possible. I’m about 20% of the way through so hopefully I can start the final book Tuesday night!!

Alright that’s my wrap up! Did you participate in Spookathon? How did you do?
