Mini Review: Recent Romance Reads

Mini reviews of some my most recent romance reads!

Desperate Measures (Wicked Villains #1) by Katee Robert ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A princess locked in a tower is only kept away from the world for one reason: it has nothing to do with her safety and everything to do with her perceived value.

I knew before even starting that I was going to love this. Katee Robert is my new favorite author of 2020 and this book just further solidified that. I flipping love the concept of this entire series – BDSM romance where the villains of your favorite childhood Disney movies get the HEA. Fucking perfection.

This book is steamy AF and extremely over the top and I was living and breathing it. I love the escapism of over the top, unbelievable romances and this delivered. I also love how Katee Robert managed to weave strong feminist themes into such a sex-centric story.

This book goes hard on the daddy kink and d/s themes. It also has many instances of consensual, non-consensual sex so be aware of that going in! I bought all 4 books that are currently released and will most definitely be binging the entire series immediately.

Learn My Lesson (Wicked Villains #2) by Katee Robert ⭐⭐⭐.5

I am most definitely in the minority here but I just didn’t love this one quite as much as the first book.

There was so much to love about this story! Meg is an absolute queen and I loved the polyamorous relationship. Katee Robert does such an amazing job making this relationship feel equal and healthy. I love that Hercules added so much to the relationship and balanced out the other two. It was dynamic I haven’t read before and really loved.

But I felt like this story was a little repetitive and I started getting annoyed with the stubbornness of the characters toward the end. Overall though I’m completely obsessed with this series – who doesn’t want their favorite Disney character ruined in the best way 😅

Tink is my favorite character in the series so far so I CAN’T WAIT to start the next book!

The Chase (Briar U #1) by Elle Kennedy ⭐⭐.5

I’ve had this book on my TBR forever so I’m really glad I finally got to it! Unfortunately it was a big ‘ol disappointment.. I loved the Off-Campus series (well, the first 3 books at least) so I went into this thinking it would be another favorite. But the characters in this one drove me absolutely crazy. While their sexual chemistry was off the charts, their relationship felt entirely surface level. I could never pinpoint what they actually liked about each other, other than their appearance. Because that is all they ever talked about.

Elle Kennedy can write one hell of a sex scene and the audiobook for this was extremely well narrated. But unfortunately, those are the two things I enjoyed most about this book. The rest of it was filled with girl hate, bar brawls, inflated egos, repetitive arguments, and loads of rich privilege.

Overall I just really disliked these characters and it has me nervous to continue on with the series…
