August Wrap Up

The last month of summer is over!

I know summer isn’t over until late September, but the end of August signifies the start of fall in my world 😍

August was a pretty solid reading month! It wasn’t a record breaking month, but read a lot of things I really enjoyed.

1. The Winter of the Witch (The Winternight Trilogy #3) by Katherine Arden ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

This series was absolutely amazing! This final book was a serious emotional rollercoaster. I loved absolutely everything about it and I’m going to miss this world so much. Definitely check out my mini review for all my thoughts!

2. The Night Swim Megan Goldin ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

One of my favorite thrillers of the year! This book is really difficult to read at times, but so wonderfully done. And the audiobook was perfection. Highly, highly recommend checking this one out – but major trigger warning for rape, assault, and victim blaming!

3. Deity (Covenant #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5

I have a mini series review going up for this in the next week or so, so definitely keep an eye out for that. This was hands down my favorite book of the series though! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and this ending had me screaming.

4. Blitzed (Playbook #3) by Alexa Martin ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I adore this series by Alexa Martin! I will say, this series loves the 3rd act conflict (which I personally hate) but other than that, this series is perfection. These characters were so relatable and compelling and had me laughing out loud.

5. From Blood and Ash (From Blood and Ash #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This book had it’s ups and downs but in the end it was a solid, enjoyable read! The first 200 pages are a total drag but once the plot gets going, it’s impossible to put down. Nothing in this necessarily surprised me, all the twists were pretty obvious in my opinion, but I still enjoyed the actual execution.

6. Drive Me Wild (Bellamy Creek #1) by Melanie Harlow ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My favorite book of the month! This romance was sweet, sexy, and completely addictive! I read this entire book in a single day because I was so in love with this romance. The town, the characters, and the chemistry were everything I wanted and more!

7. How to Catch a Sinful Marquess (The Disreputable Debutantes #3) by Amy Rose Bennett ⭐⭐.5

Unfortunately this historical romance was a massive bust. This was full of insta-love and one dimensional characters. I go into more detail in my review, but the gist is – skip this one.

8. City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy #1) by S.A. Chakraborty ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I finally read this beast! This book/series has been on my TBR since I joined the community 2 years ago. I tried picking it up once before but gave up like 50 pages in. This time I was hooked immediately! I loved this world and magic system so much. I cannot wait to dive into book 2 as soon as possible!

9. A Song Below Water by Bethany C. Morrow ⭐⭐.5

I’m still heartbroken over this book. I was so excited to pick up this YA contemporary/fantasy but sadly it didn’t work for me at all.. For me this book lacked necessary world building and was not well paced.

10. Elixir (Covenant #3.5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout ⭐⭐⭐

This was short novella that honestly didn’t add a ton to the series. I think some of the information was necessary since it’s referenced in the next book. But like the prequel novella, this could have been boiled down to an extra 10 pages at the front of the next book…

11. Apollyon (Covenant #4) by Jennifer L. Armentrout ⭐⭐⭐.5

This was the second to last book in the Covenant series. While this was still really enjoyable, it felt mostly like setup for the final book. Although, that last scene was tense AF!!

12. The Henna Wars by Abida Jaigirdar ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I read this for the Dragons and Tea Book Club and it was such an amazing experience! This book was much heavier than I anticipated and sparked some really amazing discussion about cultural appropriation. While I loved the topics in here, I did think the romance was missing some development. I wish we had gotten more time and development there!

13. Bringing Down the Duke (A League of Extraordinary Women #1) by Evie Dunmore ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I finally read this!! This historical romance was crazy hyped last year when it released and I’ve just been sleeping on it. This was a really fun, hate to love romance that I couldn’t get enough of. I loved the chemistry between the main characters and the side characters were so well developed – I can’t wait for each of their books!

14. Sentinel (Covenant #5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I can’t believe I binged this series in less than 2 months – who even am I?! This final book was full of non-stop action and definitely had me on edge to the very last page. I don’t think it was perfect, but it was definitely a satisfying conclusion to a really fun series!

15. The Peculiar Incident on Shady Street by Lindsay Currie ⭐⭐⭐

This was the first book I finished for Summerween and it fulfilled the prompt to read a book about a haunted house. And it definitely had all the haunted house vibes! This was a really fun, paranormal middle grade book about a girl who moves to Chicago and discovers their house is haunted. While this didn’t blow me away, it definitely was a great way to kick off the week and spooky season!

16. Where Dreams Descend by Janella Angeles ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I finally read one of my most anticipated releases of the year! This book gave me all the magical, mysterious vibes I wanted from this. This book transported me to this creepy town and carnival. I thought this was going to be a 5 star read for the majority of this book – but I am so confused by the ending of this… I felt like not a single thing was answered and I found it a little confusing. But I’m RIDICULOUSLY excited to pick up the sequel when it’s released!

17. The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Another book that’s been on my TBR forever that I’m really excited I read this week! I absolutely flew through this thriller. I found the author’s writing be so engaging and readable. I never wanted to put this down! And this twist totally got me! I did not see it coming in the slightest.

What was the best book you read this month?? Feel free to share links to your wrap-ups in the comments below so I can check them out!

  2. 17 books?! You’re a reading machine! I’m sorry to hear A Song Below Water didn’t work for you–I’m reading it right now and I must admit it hasn’t quite hooked me yet, but I’m intrigued enough to keep going. I need to carry on with the Winternight Trilogy!

  3. My jaw dropped when I saw you read 17 books this month! Also, totally agree with you, August is over and Spooky Season has begun. I’m so ready to cozy up in knit sweater with tea and read books about witches (this is what happens to me when Fall hits). I keep seeing good reviews about Where Dreams Descend. I’m really intrigued to read it! Great wrap up! – Amber

    • It helps that I’m stuck at home all day every day 😅 And same!!! It’s just starting to cool down in Wisconsin and I’m so excited for cozy sweaters and fall decorations!

Definitely check out Where Dreams Descend! It won’t be for everyone, but it’s beautifully written and super magical! It would actually make a great September read 😉😂

Hope you have an amazing September!
