Rainy Day Reads

It’s springtime in the Northern Hemisphere and that means lots of rain and plenty of excuses to stay inside and cozy up with a good book ☂️

There is something so comforting about a good spring rain. These are 15 books I think would be perfect companions for those dreary and cozy spring days.

Some of these are atmospheric, some are dark and ominous, and others are just the perfect books to binge and get lost in.

Atmospheric Fantasy

1. Fable series by Adrienne Young

Goodreads Page

If you’ve been around the book community at all in the last year, you’ve probably heard the hype of this series. But it’s absolutely fantastic and worth all the buzz!

This duet is dark, gritty, and super cutthroat. And it’s the perfect binge-worthy series for a rainy weekend!

2. Sorcery of Thorns by Morgan Rogers

Goodreads Page

This standalone fantasy made this list in part because it’s a standalone. I love standalone fantasy for a day of reading because you just can sit down and consume the entire thing.

This setting is really atmospheric and full of libraries and magical books. It’s definitely a world you’ll love to get lost in.

3. The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller

Goodreads Page

Another dark, standalone YA fantasy! This book is one you won’t be able to put down until the very last page. It’s highly addictive and compulsively readable.

This story at it’s core is a villain romance and it’s fantastically executed. You won’t be able to help but root for (and love) these villainous characters.

Dark & Ominous Reads

4. The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw

Goodreads Page

This book is all about the atmosphere. The story takes place at rainy costal town in Oregon cursed by 3 witches who return every summer – and steal boys and drown them in the ocean.

The way Shea Ernshaw creates ambience is true magic. And you won’t be able to help being sucked into this world.

5. House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig

Goodreads Page

Another cold and rainy setting. This dark fantasy is a 12 Dancing Princesses retelling with a paranormal twist. It’s set in a seaside kingdom that worships a sea god – so it’ll be the perfect companion for a dark & stormy day!

6. Down Comes the Night by Allison Saft

Goodreads Page

This is a gothic, YA fantasy with another ominous setting. This takes place in a war-ridden queendom on the brink of collapse. When the main character is exiled, she finds herself at gothic mansion caring for her queendoms biggest enemy.

It’s dark, atmospheric, really romantic.

7. Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

Goodreads Page

This adult fantasy reads almost like dark fairytale. I highly recommend the audiobook for this as it’s narrator by Neil Gaiman himself and adds the fairytale vibe.

But don’t be fooled – this story is creepy! I don’t want to give too much away but it follows the tale of a boy who discovers his new nanny is actually a demon. And must team up with the witches down the lane to send her back where she came from.

Thrilling Reads

8. The Guest List by Lucy Foley

Goodreads Page

This book has been everywhere since it was released! It’s a slow burn mystery set on a remote island during a wedding. A massive thunderstorm hits, the power goes out, and a body is discovered.

From there were go back and learn who has been killed and which of the guests is a murderer.

9. The Night Swim by Megan Goldin

Goodreads Page

This legal thriller made the list because it is an absolutely captivating story that you won’t be able to put down!

This follows a rape trial in a small town that is being featured on a crime podcast. Simultaneously, the podcast host is being drawn into an murder case that happened 25 years prior.

I highly recommend this as an audiobook! Not only is the full cast outstanding but the podcast elements sound like actual podcasts!

10. Truly Devious series by Maureen Johnson

Goodreads Page

This is a YA mystery series that will have you on the edge of your set! The setting is fantastic. It takes place at a prestigious boarding school on the side of a mountain that is dedicated to teaching the country’s brightest students.

The main character is obsessed with a unsolved murder that occurred when the school first opened, and makes it her mission to solve the case.

The good news is the entire trilogy is out so you won’t have to suffer the intense cliffhangers at the end of each book!

Emotional Contemporary

11. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

Goodreads Page

If you want to spend your rainy day lost in the most beautiful writing you can possibly imagine – this book is for you!

This historical masterpiece follows the life of Addie LaRue who will never age and die but is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets. It will leave you lost in the pages and begging for me in the end.

12. The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

Goodreads Page

If you’d rather spend your rainy day having a good long cry, look no further than this emotional story! Content warnings for attempted suicide, abuse, depression, and loss of loved ones.

This contemporary has a slightly fantastical twist and follows a woman who finds herself in a library between life and death. There she is able to revisit every choice she’s made and see how her life would have happened differently.

13. The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

Goodreads Page

This book is told in dual timelines and is have historical and half contemporary. In the past, you see a woman who owns an apothecary shop dedicated to seeking revenge on the men who hurt woman. And in modern day we follow a woman who is in London after discovering her husband is having an affair.

This is a story of women capturing their power any way they can. It’s a beautiful story, and another one I recommend the audiobook for!

Bingeable Romance

14. Wild series by K.A. Tucker

Goodreads Page

This book is the perfect escapism. Not only will this enemies to lovers/opposites attract romance sweep you away, but the book takes place in the Alaskan wilds and follows a team of bush pilots.

And if you love this first book, there’s a sequel AND a novella to binge once you’re done!

15. Here and Now series by Lexi Ryan

Goodreads Page

Last but not least – a highly addictive romance trilogy to lose yourself in. This romance series is full of cheesy tropes – love triangle, amnesia, rock star. But trust me, you won’t be able to put it down until the last page! This is pure popcorn entertainment!

Let me know what some of your perfect rainy day reads are and if you’ve read any of the books on this list – or WANT to!
